Description
Krugerrand is a South African coin produced by Rand Refinery and the South African mint. The coin was first minted in 1967, it was produced with a gold-copper alloy to make it more durable. Krugerrand 1oz gold coin is 33.9 grams of 22kt Gold, while still giving you 1 troy oz of pure gold. This is the reason it has a reddish hue because of the copper present in it. On the face of the coin, it has Paul Kruger’s face the former president of South Africa, and on the reserve side of the coin, there is a pronking springbok.
Krugerrand’s success in the 1970s and 1980s during the bullish market pushed other countries to start minting and issuing their own gold bullion coins, for example, Canadian Gold Maple leaf in 1979, Britannia Coin in 1987, and many more. For the 50th anniversary, the mint produced a premium version of the coins and launched platinum and silver coins
When the Krugerrand coin was introduced, it became an instant hit in the world market. It covered more than 90% of gold coin trading in the world. In the late 70s and early 80s, The U.S.A. imported nearly 22 million Krugerrand coins. This showed that a new market was there that was untapped and soon others followed. It was first sold on the German market, and later in the year nicknamed ‘The Mother of all Gold Coins’
